Tea Party Blows Its Cool

The Tea Party’s Obama obsession has gone so far now that I fully expect Glenn Beck, ala David Icke, to shortly label Barack an alien lizard from Outer Space as in the TV series “V”.

Of course, the Obama obsession serves to keep attention away from the sillier aspects of Tea Party agit-prop. For example, Texas reactionary Dick Armey, who heads FreedomWorks, a corporate Tea Party front, said Jamestown was settled by ‘socialists.’ In reality, Jamestown was a corporate-proprietary colony of which even Ayn Rand would approve.

Or, Tea Party allies in the Texas School Board airbrushed Patriot & Founding Father Thomas Jefferson from history books approved for the State of Texas. This is probably because Jefferson was a deist, meaning he believed in God but didn’t think too much of contemporary churches. The Texas School Board substituted for their devotion the religious maniac John Calvin who had the nasty habit of literally burning those folks he disagreed with.

Obsessing about Obama as an individual avoids pointing to other contradictions of the Tea Party. For example, as libertarian James Bovard has noted: “Many ‘tea party’ activists staunchly oppose big government, except when it’s warring, wiretapping, or waterboarding.” Their blindness to the Military-Industrial Complex or National Security State makes the Tea Party calls for ‘less government’ sound utopian and hollow.

The Tea Party’s selective ‘anarchism’ mostly consists of pining for corporate deregulation. Just as that selective deregulation led to Reagan downsizing the Border Patrol, it also is a straight line to exploding coal mines in West Virginia and apocalyptic oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico.

But the Tea Party would rather watch the upside down infomercials that constitute Fox News, where the privileged and aging ranks of the GOP can imagine themselves as powerless.

I hold no brief for Obama. But other than lighter skin tone, don’t try to tell me that Mitt Romney would be an improvement. That’s what happens when you concentrate on personalities instead of policy.

The Tea Party in its fury sounds like a right-wing version of Weatherman. It’s part and parcel of the whole escalation of bullshit in the country. The Obama obsession conveniently masks the mental & gonadal deficiencies of the Tea Party.
