Much of the US public is on to the con. In 2007, 60% of Americans polled felt the upcoming 2008 Presidential election to be a waste of time.
You also can’t take what the politicians are saying seriously. Bush in 2000 was steadfast against the modest nation-building of the Clinton Administration. But look at what 2003 wrought. A majority of Arab-Americans in 2000 voted for the Bush-Cheney ticket, feeling that Al Gore was too thick with the Israel Lobby. But in office, Bush functioned as a member of the Likud.
Now we have the living spectacle of Barack Obama, the erstwhile candidate of ‘Change’, functioning in practice as Bush III. In honor of Chinese New Year, let’s cite the I Ching: The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Now the ‘Change’ candidate is Sarah Palin. She operates as if she has a purloined copy of Obama’s campaign playbook. All generalities, nothing concrete.
She says she’s for reducing the deficit. But as a born-again Neocon, she’s committed to continuing, even expanding the wars of Bush & Obama. This makes reducing the deficit impossible without a raid, big-time, on Social Security & Medicare. Wall Street is already salivating over this prospect. She dodges this which is a sure sign she’s running. If she gets enough money, she might even win. That’s how the game is played.
