The Republicans & Us

With the continuing slide of Obama, big Republican gains are expected in the off year election coming up this fall. So what?

Obama is sinking because of the miserable jobs situation. Were the unemployment figures under 10% and improving, a discredited GOP–supported by 20% of the electorate–wouldn’t have a wing and a prayer.

So what do the Republicans offer? Nothing more than the same old shibboleths of the conservative era:

1) Small government
2) Cut top end taxes
3) Free multinationals to move jobs abroad
4) Deregulate finance
5) War on labor unions
6) Trade deficits don’t matter

The above are also the basic views of those 2 heroines of the Tea Party Movement, Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachman. They also add support for the Neocon foreign policy which requires big government.

The alternative is presented by Pat Buchanan. He offers a package deal of protectionism, isolationism and nativism. This translates into higher tariffs for lower taxes, the Cold War is long over so bring the troops home and Pat thinks we really need a wall down along the Southern borders.

While Buchanan’s program is too limited in my humble view, at least he recognizes there can be no true recovery without rebuilding our manufacturing base. Our last Republican Presidenct, one Dubya, lost one sixth of our manufacturing jobs. He was just continuing the wrecking job of his predecessors. The steep decline in real wages began in 1973 under Nixon when the free trade system began in earnest. This, of course, was after he was re-elected in 1972. Under Reagan, free trade went on steroids. And so it goes.

Dubya also continued the Reagan policy of not guarding the border. At least 4 million illegals came after 9/11. Dubya also picked up an idea from John McCain, work visas. In the interests of Big Business, this would place American workers in competition with the labor force of the entire planet.

So why isn’t Buchanan being heard more? He doesn’t fit in with the Establishment. His air time is limited to providing ‘balance’ on MSNBC.
Naturally the uber-Neocon Fox News Channel won’t touch him.

David Brooks, Neocon columnist of the New York Times, has been in the vanguard of the Neocon vendetta against Buchanan. You can see Brooks every Friday on the “News Hour” on PBS. He provides Republican balance against Democrat Mark Shields. Both wear glasses but Shields has a full head of hair; Brooks is balding but has a tuff of hair in the front that looks like a pussy.

Usually Brooks just labels Buchanan as an anti-Semite. But in one column back in March of 2006, Brooks snarlingly suggested the following program for Democrats:

1) Run as a smiling Democratic-Buchananite

2) Attack the Dubai ports deal to burnish your national security credentials.

3) Call for less foreign adventurism & more spending @ home to win the Democratic base.

4) Go hard against illegal immigration to win the working-class.

5) Rail against China & free trade deals to build support in the Midwest.

6) Bash France for the fun of it.

Sorry Mr Brooks! That might be a good program to run on. That was the old-time Republicanism. Too bad for us they don’t bring it back.
